The Ericofon, created by Ericsson in Sweden in the late 1940s, was the world’s first one-piece telephone, combining handset and dial into a single sculpted form. Nicknamed the “Cobra phone” for its snake-like shape, it became a landmark of mid-century modern industrial design.
Released to the public in 1956, the Ericofon was sold worldwide, including in the U.S., where it became a bestseller. Produced in a wide range of colours, it stood out from traditional telephones of the era.
Most models used rotary dials, but U.S. versions by North Electric featured the innovative “Ericotone” transistor ringer, which produced a distinctive chirp instead of a bell. A rare touch-tone model appeared in 1967 but saw limited production.
Though North American production ended in 1972, the Ericofon remains a design classic and a favourite among collectors today.
