This 1974 clear Northern Electric Contempra is an unusual field-trial prototype with a transparent body that reveals its internal design. Unlike a regular Contempra, it has no network or ringer attached to the base. Instead, both are built into the handset.
The body mould dates are from the fourth quarter of 1973, while the components date to the first quarter of 1974. The telephone has since been refurbished, and the photographs document its original condition, internal components and restored appearance.
Contempra designer John Tyson later recalled that some engineers wanted to market this version, but he persuaded them not to proceed. His August 2022 comment adds an interesting personal perspective to the story of this unusual prototype.
